Grab A Screen Shot From an Active Window

Sometimes you might need to send a picture of the "Active Window" to someone who's helping you out with a computer problem. What's the Active Window? It's the Window that's in front of all the other ones. You can often identify the Active Window by its Title Bar. The Title Bar on the Active Window is a different color than the "non-Active" windows. Here's how you get a picture of that Active Window:

  • Click on the window or dialog box you want to take a picture of. A dialog box is not a window, but it'll be Active when you click on it.
  • Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard. With the ALT key held down, press the PRTSCN button (Print Screen). This copies the Active Window to the clipboard.
  • Now create a new email message or open the Microsoft Paint program. Click the Paste button or click the Edit menu and click the Paste command.

A picture of the Active Window now appears in your application.
