Installing Desktop Remote

Want to use a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer to access your Windows XP Professional desktop using Remote Desktop? Unlike Windows XP Pro and Home, these operating systems don't have the remote desktop client installed by default, but you can install it on them to access your XP desktop remotely.

  1. Ensure that your XP computer is configured to allow remote desktop connections in Control Panel | System | Remote tab.
  2. Use your Windows XP installation CD or download the Remote Desktop client software at our download section.
  3. Install the RDC client software on the Windows 9x computer. To install from the CD, choose Perform additional tasks on the Welcome page and then select Set up Remote Desktop Connection.
  4. To connect, on the Windows 9x machine click Start | Programs | Accessories | Communications | Remote Desktop Connection.
  5. Enter the name or IP address of the XP Professional computer and click the Connect button.
