Create A Password Reset Disk

If you have a Windows XP computer that doesn't belong to a domain (it's a standalone machine or member of a peer-to-peer network), you can ensure that forgetting a password doesn't result in your being locked out of your computer forever by making a password reset disk. Here's how:

  1. Click Start, Control Panel, User Accounts
  2. Select your account name and click Create a Password Reset Disk, Create Disk using a wizard.
  3. On the first page of the wizard, click Next.
  4. Insert a floppy disk or zip disk on which you want to create the reset disk. Click Next.
  5. Enter your password and click Next.
  6. Click Finish.

An encrypted version of your password will be stored on the disk. Now if you forget your password, you will be able to use this disk to set a new password. Note that it will not work if you've changed your password since you made the reset disk. Each time you change your password, you need to make a new reset disk.
