Defragging Your Hard Drive

When programs are installed on your computer, the program's files can be broken up over different locations on your hard drive. This is called fragmentation. If fragmentation occurs on your hard drive, the performance on your computer is slower. The Disk Defragmenter locates and consolidates fragmented boot files, data files and folders on local volumes. It also optimizes the performance of your computer by reorganizing the files. When the Disk Defragmenter tool completes the defragmentation of files on your hard disk, the performance of your programs are faster because the files are arranged closer together.

Note: It is our recommendation that a 3rd party software be purchased for this type of process. Microsoft's built in defragmentation software is a minimal cure for defragmented hard drives.

Below are the procedures for the respective OS to show you how to Defrag your hard drive.

Windows 95/98/98SE/Millennium

To start the Disk Defragmenter tool, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Click the drive you want to defragment, click OK, and then click Yes.

Windows NT

Windows NT does not have a built in defragmentation tool.

A program that will defrag your NT system is Diskeeper software. Additional information can be found at the Diskeeper Web site.

Windows 2000/XP

  1. You might need to be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.
  2. To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
  3. Click the drive you want to defragment, click the Defrag button and then wait for the defragmentation tool to finish.
